Police dismiss claims of fresh herdsmen attack in Wannune, clarifies what transpired

The Benue State Police Command has dismissed viral social media reports alleging a herdsmen attack in Wannune, Tarka Local Government Area, clarifying that the claims are false and misleading.

In a statement on Sunday, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet, explained that the incident being referenced was a case of targeted violence unrelated to herdsmen.

According to the police, the event occurred around 8:00 p.m. on June 21, 2025, when a distress call reported the fatal shooting of one Aondoakaa Yayough along Akume Road in Wannune.

Officers swiftly responded to the scene.

Preliminary findings identified the suspected shooter as Saater Aii, an ex-convict. Though he was initially apprehended by local security personnel, he managed to escape custody.

Two others were injured by stray bullets and were taken to the hospital for treatment.

An AK-47 rifle used in the attack was recovered at the scene, and efforts are ongoing to rearrest the suspect.

DSP Edet urged the public to avoid spreading false narratives and rely solely on verified information from credible sources.

“There was no report of herdsmen in Wannune,” he stressed.
