JUST IN; Fake Policeman arrested allegedly for stealing officer’s uniform

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 22-year-old man, Onipede Ojo, for allegedly impersonating a police officer after he was found wearing a stolen police camouflage uniform and in possession of items belonging to a serving officer.
The suspect was apprehended after vigilant residents reportedly became suspicious of his conduct while he was dressed in police attire and presenting himself as a law enforcement officer.
According to the police, further scrutiny revealed that Ojo was allegedly using a police camouflage uniform stolen alongside other personal belongings belonging to an officer.
Items reportedly taken from the officer included a warrant card, mobile phone, ATM card and other valuables contained in a missing bag.
The command said the suspect had allegedly worn the camouflage uniform in a bid to pass himself off as a genuine police officer.
A video circulating on social media platform X showed Ojo claiming that he found the uniform, which bore the name tag of an inspector identified as Jimoh Weheed, along Maryland Road in Lagos.
However, residents who encountered him reportedly questioned his identity after observing that his behaviour and mannerisms did not match those of a serving police officer.
Their suspicions eventually led to the discovery that he was allegedly impersonating a member of the force before he was handed over to the police.
The Lagos State Police Command confirmed that the suspect is currently in custody and undergoing further investigation.
Police authorities said he would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
While commending residents for their alertness and cooperation, the command cautioned against taking the law into their own hands.
The police condemned all forms of jungle justice, stressing that suspects must be handed over to law enforcement agencies for proper investigation and prosecution.
The command noted that the laws of Lagos State do not permit extrajudicial punishment, regardless of the offence allegedly committed.
It also urged residents to remain vigilant and continue supporting security efforts by promptly reporting suspicious persons, movements and activities while allowing due process to take its course.
