JUST IN; Atiku yet to endorse ADA as coalition platform
Contrary to widespread media speculation, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has not endorsed the All Democratic Alliance (ADA) as the official coalition platform for his political movement, his media aide has stated.
Demola Olarenwaju, Special Assistant on Digital Media Strategy to Atiku, clarified on Sunday that while discussions are ongoing, several unresolved issues remain between Atiku’s political group and the emerging coalition.
The Nigeria National Coalition Group (NNCG), associated with Atiku’s camp, had reportedly submitted an application to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Friday seeking registration of ADA as a political party ahead of the 2027 elections.
However, the move has drawn criticism from several quarters within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), including governors and influential stakeholders who oppose any effort to align the party with a new coalition.
Atiku, who served as vice president under the PDP from 1999 to 2007 and was its presidential candidate in 2023, is facing increasing pressure from within the party over his political direction.
Sources within the PDP suggest that a formal break between Atiku and the party is now only a matter of time.
Reports also indicate that former Senate President David Mark may be preparing to exit the party alongside Atiku further compounding the challenges facing the former ruling party.
Reacting to the media coverage, Olarenwaju criticized the press for contributing to political instability, posting on his X handle that Nigerian newspapers often exacerbate the nation’s political challenges through inaccurate reporting.
“A group is in the process of pursuing party registration, just like any other Nigerian, but they need to coordinate this with the coalition,” he said.
He added: “ADA has not been adopted by the coalition, and when the time is right, the public will be informed about the appropriate choices and decisions. Just be patient with that.”
