Police Pension; IGP Tunji Disu pushes for pension reforms, vows backing for retired officers

The Nigeria Police Force has signalled a renewed push to address long-standing pension and welfare concerns affecting its retired personnel, following high-level engagement between its leadership and former officers.

Details of the move were contained in a statement issued on April 14, indicating that the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, recently met with a delegation of retirees to deliberate on persistent issues around pensions and gratuities.

At the meeting, Disu acknowledged that pension-related challenges remain a major concern, describing them as pressing while assuring that efforts are underway to deliver sustainable solutions.

The police chief also outlined a framework aimed at ensuring that complaints from retired officers receive attention at the highest levels, including direct engagement with the Federal Government.

“The Inspector General of Police outlined two distinct avenues to ensure retirees’ grievances reach the highest levels of government,” the statement read.

He further assured that retired officers would not be hindered from expressing their concerns, noting that adequate security would be provided for any peaceful demonstrations.

Beyond pensions, the Force is also weighing options to improve employment prospects for children of retired officers through future recruitment exercises.

Disu stressed that safeguarding the welfare and dignity of retired personnel remains a priority, maintaining that the institution’s responsibility to its officers extends beyond active service.
