Insecurity driven by election, politics, will fade after 2027 polls — Senate President Akpabio
President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, on Tuesday linked the surge in insecurity across the country to political activities ahead of upcoming elections, expressing confidence that the situation would ease shortly after the polls.
Akpabio spoke in Abuja at the official launch of the Nigerian Revenue Service (NRS) Corporate Headquarters, where he also commended President Bola Tinubu for what he described as strong performance in office.
According to the Senate President, rising insecurity is being fuelled by political actors opposed to the current administration.
“Insecurity is increasing because election is coming, because people don’t know what to do again. Immediately after election, two weeks after election, the insecurity will stop. The insecurity is being sponsored by people,” he said.
He maintained that the situation would improve swiftly once the electoral process concludes.
Akpabio also took a swipe at the opposition, suggesting it was fragmented and struggling to present a coherent alternative.
In an apparent reference to Peter Obi, he said, “Opposition is in disarray, someone got six million votes and abandoned the party, abandoned the six million votes and went shopping for another platform and they are blaming the ruling party.”
Calling for patience from Nigerians, the Senate President urged continued support for the administration.
“Let Nigerians be patient with you, you are doing the right thing,” he said
He further praised the Executive Chairman of the NRS, Zacch Adedeji, describing him as widely accepted by Nigerians despite the traditional perception of tax officials.
“even in the Bible people don’t like tax collectors. Zacch has done very well and Nigerians are happy with him,” he added.
The event also featured the commissioning of the new NRS headquarters by President Tinubu.
The complex, a multi-tower facility with 16 floors, is designed to accommodate about 3,000 personnel.
Other dignitaries at the ceremony included Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, and Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu.
Also in attendance were Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, members of the Federal Executive Council, and several state governors, including Babagana Zulum, Charles Soludo, Caleb Mutfwang, Hope Uzodimma, and Usman Ododo.
The development follows the signing of the Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Act by President Tinubu in June 2025, which formally transformed the Federal Inland Revenue Service into the Nigerian Revenue Service.
