I wanted to join Police, but wasn’t recruited – Fake Police officer gives revelation

26-year-old Yakubu Usman, who is a motorcycle rider, was arrested for impersonating a police officer, claiming his actions stemmed from a passion for law enforcement, failed attempts to join the police, and a desire to protect his motorcycle from seizure.

Originally from Gworza Local Government Area in Borno State, Usman now resides in Lagos. He was apprehended by a surveillance team from the Alausa Division of the Lagos State Police Command around 2 a.m. on October 21. Officers on night patrol spotted him with an unregistered Bajaj motorcycle near Fela Kuti’s shrine, where he had just dropped off a passenger.

When approached, Usman falsely identified himself as an Assistant Superintendent of Police, presenting a counterfeit identity card. However, the officers quickly identified the Force number on the card as fraudulent, and a closer examination revealed a forged signature of an Assistant Inspector General of Police on a warrant card.

Additionally, he was found wearing a jacket labeled with “E&ES.”

During questioning, Usman admitted to impersonating an officer, explaining that he had previously assisted real police officers with errands and menial tasks, while also working as a motorcycle taxi rider.

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed Usman’s arrest and stated he would face charges in court once the investigation conclude.

The suspect, in an interview, told Sunday Tribune the reason behind the impersonation: “I fell in love with the police job. I tried to join the Nigeria Police Force twice back home in Borno, but I was unsuccessful.

“The first time, I was dropped after going through medical checkup and I was diagnosed with chronic typhoid. The second time, I was simply told that I was not qualified. That was in the police college, Maiduguri.”
