Governor mourns as Police AIG reportedly dies
The Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 9 Headquarters, Umuahia, AIG Kanayo Uzuegbu, has passed away after battling cancer.
The death of the senior police officer was announced on Saturday by the Governor of Abia State, Alex Otti, during an event in Umuahia.
Speaking while delivering his acceptance speech after securing the Labour Party governorship ticket for a second term ahead of the 2027 election, Otti expressed sadness over the demise of the police chief and paid tribute to his service to the nation.
The governor described the late AIG as a dedicated and professional officer who discharged his duties with commitment and diligence throughout his career in the Nigeria Police Force.
He also offered prayers for the repose of Uzuegbu’s soul and urged God to grant his family, friends, colleagues and associates the fortitude to cope with the loss.
Following the announcement, participants at the event observed a minute’s silence in honour of the deceased officer at the International Conference Centre in Umuahia.
AIG Uzuegbu served as the head of Zone 9 Police Command, which oversees policing activities in the South-East region. His death has sparked an outpouring of tributes from members of the police community and others who worked with him during his years of service.
