Drama as 2 ex–Deputies Gov clash over who should represent State at annual Conference

A mild drama unfolded in Abuja on Tuesday when former Edo Deputy Governors, Philip Shaibu and Omobayo Godwins, clashed over who should represent the state at the Former Deputy Governors’ Forum’s fourth annual national conference.

The confrontation began after Omobayo was introduced as Edo’s former deputy governor, prompting an open objection from Shaibu.

The disagreement quickly disrupted the event as both men argued over who was the legitimate officeholder.

Speaking after the incident, Shaibu faulted the introduction, insisting that Omobayo “was never elected but brought in through the backdoor.”

He maintained that a court had already nullified his impeachment, declaring that “the office was never vacant.”

In response, Omobayo distanced himself from the controversy, stating that he did not appoint himself deputy governor.

He described the confrontation as “almost a national disgrace,” adding that he had tried to remain calm throughout the episode.

Shaibu was impeached as Edo State Deputy Governor in April 2024 and replaced by Omobayo Godwins.

However, a subsequent court ruling voided the impeachment and reinstated Shaibu, setting the stage for the lingering tension between both men.
