United States Govt commends Nigeria over 386 terrorism convictions

The United States has praised Nigeria for accelerating the prosecution of terrorism-related cases, following the conviction of 386 suspects in recent large-scale trials.

In a statement shared via X on Sunday, Massad Boulos said Washington views the development as a major step towards strengthening accountability and justice in the country.

“The United States commends the Nigerian government for its strong commitment to expediting trials addressing terrorism and related crimes. We welcome the convictions of 386 Islamist militants in cases that had previously faced significant delays in the courts,” the statement reads.

“We believe that timely and transparent legal processes are critical in confronting extremism and reinforcing public trust in judicial institutions. Upholding the rule of law remains essential to ensuring the safety, stability, and long-term security of all Nigerians.”

Nigeria’s Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, had disclosed that the convictions were secured from 508 terrorism-related cases handled by the courts.

The trials represent one of the country’s most coordinated efforts to clear a backlog of terrorism cases, many of which had remained unresolved for years.

The development comes as the Federal Government intensifies its crackdown on terrorism financing and extremist networks.

As part of this effort, the Nigeria Sanctions Committee recently published a list of individuals and entities alleged to be linked to terrorism financing.

Among those named are Simon Ekpa and Tukur Mamu, alongside proscribed groups such as Indigenous People of Biafra, Ansarul Sudan, and Islamic State West Africa Province.

In related developments, a Federal High Court in Abuja had in November 2025 sentenced IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, to life imprisonment on terrorism charges.

Similarly, on April 7, another Federal High Court in Abuja convicted four individuals for supplying materials to Boko Haram insurgents in Borno State.
