JUST IN: Six House of Reps members defect to APC, dump PDP
Six members of the House of Representatives from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) have officially defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The defections were announced by Speaker Abbas Tajudeen during a special session on the 2024 and 2025 Appropriation Bills, where the lawmakers’ letters were formally read on the House floor.
In their letters, the legislators cited persistent divisions within the PDP that, they said, undermined party cohesion.
They also commended President Bola Tinubu’s administration for its achievements over the past two years and pledged to support government efforts to “rebuild the nation.”
The defecting members include Dum Dekor (Khana/Gokana), Solomon Bob (Ahoada East/Abua/Odual), Victor Obuzor (Ahoada West/Ogba), Blessing Amadi (Port Harcourt II), Felix Nweke (Eleme/Tai/Oyigbo), and Hart Cyril (Degema/Bonny).
Present in the chamber to witness the defections were top APC officials, including Deputy Chairman, North, Ali Bukar; National Secretary, Ajibola Basiru; and National Youth Leader, Dayo Israel.
However, the move sparked debate on the legality of defections.
Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda, rising on a point of order, stated that “defections on the floor of the House are not backed by any law,” while Minority Whip Ali Isa warned that defecting members risk losing their seats.
Speaker Tajudeen responded by acknowledging their concerns but emphasized that any member wishing to formally declare a defection is “welcome at all times.”
