Why we won’t respond to Alaafin’s empty threats – Ooni’s Palace

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi, will not be responding to the Alaafin of Oyo’s ultimatum. Moses Olafare, the Ooni’s spokesperson, stated on Tuesday that the monarch has chosen to disregard the Alaafin’s demand to revoke the “Okanlomo of Yorubaland” conferred on Ibadan businessman Dotun Sanusi.

In a Facebook post, Olafare explained that the Ooni sees no reason to dignify the matter with an official response.

He added that the Ooni has left the issue to be decided by the court of public opinion.

Olafar wrote on Facebook: “My Principal has directed me against issuing a Press Release on the Empty Threat of the Alawada Babasala.

“I beg to disappoint you gentlemen of the press

“We can not dignify the undignifyable with an official response. We leave the matter to be handled in the public court of opinion has it is already being treated.

“Let’s rather focus on narratives that unite us rather than the ones capable of dividing us.

“No Press Release pls🙏🏻. 48 Hours My Foot!!!”

The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade, had earlier issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Adeyeye Ogunwusi, demanding the withdrawal of the Okanlomo of Yorubaland chieftaincy title recently bestowed on Ibadan-based business mogul, Engineer Dotun Sanusi.

Describing the Ooni’s action as an “affront,” the Alaafin insisted that the move was a direct challenge to his authority.

He further maintained that only the Alaafin holds the exclusive right to confer chieftaincy titles with jurisdiction over the entire Yorubaland.
“The conferment of a Yoruba-wide chieftaincy title by the Ooni is not only ultra vires but an insult to the Titan of Yorubaland.

“The Supreme Court itself has ruled that only the Alaafin has such authority. Yet, the Ooni continues to act above the law, trampling on both tradition and the courts.”

The Alaafin warned that if the Ooni fails to withdraw the title within 48 hours, “consequences will follow.”
