Angry mob attacks Church Over alleged r*p£, of Woman destroys property worth millions
A mob has vandalised a church in Gboko, the administrative headquarters of Gboko Local Government Area of Benue State, over allegations of rape involving a married woman.
The attack, which left properties worth over ₦10 million destroyed, has sparked outrage and a police investigation.
The incident occurred at the Throne of Grace Healing and Deliverance Ministries, located along the Gboko–Aliade Road, after reports emerged that a married woman who had visited the church for prayers was allegedly raped.
Though the details remain unclear, sources say the woman did not raise an alarm immediately, possibly due to the church’s location near the main road.
In the aftermath, a group of irate youths reportedly stormed the church premises around 11:00 a.m. on a Friday, armed with sticks and other weapons. The mob destroyed several items including chairs, musical instruments, and a public address system, before police arrived at the scene.
Speaking to journalists, the church’s General Overseer, Prophet Prince Matthew Iorhembe, confirmed the attack and said he had contacted the police as soon as the incident began.
He disclosed that three suspects have so far been arrested by operatives from the Gboko Central Police Station.
Iorhembe wondered why his church would be attacked in such a brazen manner without anyone telling him his offence.
He also confirmed that Barr. Torseer Yina, Chairman of the Gboko Local Government Council, and Hon. John Dyegh, a former member of the House of Representatives, have shown interest in the matter and are engaged in ongoing discussions.
While urging members of his congregation to remain calm, the cleric emphasized that legal processes should be allowed to run their course.
