Viral Video; Governor orders dismissal of four aides over assault on serving Lawmaker
Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State has ordered the immediate dismissal of four aides over their alleged involvement in the assault of a serving councillor, Hon. Abdulrahman Abubakar Sheriff, who represents Shamaki Ward in Gombe Local Government Area.
Those affected include Adamu Abdullahi Danko, Senior Special Assistant II (Domestic), alongside Garba Mohammed Mai Rago (Senior Special Assistant II, Political), Rabiu Sulaiman Abubakar (Senior Special Assistant II, Social Media) and Ali Ibrahim Baban Kaya (Senior Special Assistant II, Community Relations).
The decision was announced in a statement issued on Tuesday by the governor’s Director-General of Press Affairs, Isma’ila Uba Misilli, who said the directive was conveyed through the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Ibrahim Abubakar Njodi, after a special committee set up to investigate the incident concluded its work.
Misilli explained that the committee’s findings, which were also backed by reports from security agencies, prompted the governor to take decisive action.
The incident had sparked widespread outrage earlier in the day after a video circulated on social media showing one of the governor’s aides, attached to the Chief of Staff and identified as Danko, allegedly attacking the councillor.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Gombe State publicly condemned the assault, while several civil society groups, including Amnesty International and the Gombe State Network of Civil Society Organisations, also denounced the act, describing it as unacceptable and calling for justice and the removal of those responsible.
Amnesty International, in particular, characterised the attack as outrageous, warning that it reflected a broader pattern of impunity and repression by officials of the state government.
Following the governor’s directive, the disengagement of the aides takes effect immediately, with instructions for them to return all government property in their possession to the appropriate authorities without delay.
Governor Yahaya reassured residents of Gombe State of his administration’s commitment to the rule of law, accountability and peaceful coexistence, stressing that firm measures would always be taken to maintain public order and preserve the state’s stability.
