These crop of PDP Governors that we presently have might end up burying the Party – Wike
Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has warned that the current crop of governors in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) could destroy the party if internal disputes are not properly managed.
Speaking during a media parley with journalists in Abuja on Friday, Wike criticised the handling of the ongoing crisis within the opposition party, suggesting that the governors were worsening divisions instead of working toward reconciliation.
“The way the PDP governors are managing the affairs of the party, they may end up burying it,” Wike reportedly said, insinuating that the leadership lacks the political maturity needed to stabilise the party.
Wike, a two-term former governor of Rivers State under the PDP, has been at loggerheads with several of the party’s sitting governors.
The rift has deepened ahead of the PDP’s national convention scheduled for next month in Ibadan, Oyo State.
While the governors are reportedly preparing for the convention, Wike’s loyalists are said to be making moves to frustrate the exercise.
The crisis escalated after the PDP’s National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, accused the National Working Committee (NWC) of forging his signature in the notice sent to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) regarding the convention.
Party stakeholders, however, dismissed Anyanwu’s claim, alleging that he was acting on behalf of Wike’s faction.
During the Friday session, Wike expressed disappointment with the direction of the PDP’s internal politics, saying the leadership had failed to demonstrate unity and discipline necessary to position the party as a credible opposition.
“Have I not said before now that the booby trap you are setting will consume you? Have I not told you before now, the way these present governors are doing, they will bury this party?”
“Are you telling me that because I’m not a governor, you go and hold PDP meetings, call them stakeholders, and then exclude me, and you want to survive? Certainly not,” he said.
Wike also distanced himself from the stakeholders who endorsed former Minister of Special Duties, Tanimu Turaki, as the next chairman of the party.
“I don’t know about Tanimu Turaki becoming chairman. Maybe he’s becoming chairman for another faction. It’s not the PDP I know,” he said.
