Teacher arrested by Police after cane reportedly blinds Primary School Pupil
Adeola A. Adeyemo, a trainee teacher in Ogun State, has been apprehended after a tragic incident in which 11-year-old pupil Alao Idera lost her right eye.
The incident took place on Tuesday, December 2, at Owiwi Nursery and Primary School in Obada Oko, where Adeyemo, a 400-level student from Tai Solarin University in Ijagun, was carrying out her teaching practice.
According to the Ogun State Police Command spokesperson, SP Omolola Odutola, the pupil inadvertently ran into a cane that Adeyemo was holding while addressing the class. The force of the collision caused severe damage to the pupil’s eye, which had to be surgically removed at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Abeokuta.
The pupil’s family reported the incident to the police, prompting Adeyemo’s arrest. SP Odutola further revealed that the teacher, deeply distressed by the outcome, attempted to ingest harmful substances upon learning that the injury had left the pupil blind. The police are currently investigating the matter.
Odutola stated, “On December 2, 2024, around 3:00 PM, Ilesami Christiana, residing at Sabo, Abeokuta, reported that she received a phone call informing her that a teacher had injured her 11-year-old daughter, Alao Idera, in the right eye while she was attending school at Owiwi Nursery and Primary School in Obada Oko.
“The child was immediately taken to the Federal Medical Centre in Abeokuta for treatment. Following this complaint, the teacher, Adeola Adeyemo, a 400-level student from Tai Solarin University in Ijebu Ode who was on teaching practice, was swiftly arrested and is currently being interrogated. Further updates will be provided.
“The teacher didn’t flog her, the student didn’t commit anything, just the way teachers hold cane, and saying, preparing for end of year party, student rushed into the cane, but the question is why was she holding a cane? Primary 6 , 11yrs. She was operated on at FMC and the right eye was removed
“The student teacher (Adeyemo Adeola) on hearing the situation of her pupil attempted to drink harmful substances, but the police rushed her to hospital and she is now stable.”

Drug Suspect allegedly stabs NDLEA operatives during raid
Two individuals, Musa Usman, 25, and Buhari Ya’u Bashir, 24, were successfully captured by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency’s (NDLEA) Kano State Command during a targeted operation at Rahama Round in the Bebeji Local Government Area.
A variety of illegal substances, including cannabis sativa, diazepam, and Exol pills, were seized as a result of the early-morning investigation.
According to a statement from NDLEA spokesperson Sadiq Muhammad Maigatari, the suspects were found in possession of 1.1 kilograms of cannabis sativa (wrapped), 8 grams of diazepam (38 tablets), and 59 grams of Exol (165 tablets).
The operation took a violent turn when Musa Usman, who was reportedly armed with a dagger, attempted to resist arrest by attacking NDLEA officers. One officer sustained a stab wound during the altercation. The NDLEA condemned the assault, emphasizing its commitment to protecting its personnel and upholding the law.
State Commander of NDLEA, Abubakar Idris Ahmad, strongly condemned the violent actions of the suspects, reaffirming that such attacks would not deter the agency’s efforts to combat drug trafficking and abuse. “Attacks on law enforcement officers in the line of duty will not deter us from carrying out our mandate to rid society of the scourge of drug abuse and trafficking,” he stated.
Both suspects are currently in custody and are expected to face prosecution for drug-related offenses as well as the assault on an officer.
