Level of stealing of public funds under Suspended Gov Fubara was alarming – Ex Head of Service gives more details
In a stunning revelation, George Nwaeke, the former head of the Rivers State Civil Service, has accused the administration of suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara of widespread financial misappropriation.
Speaking at a press briefing on Saturday, Nwaeke condemned the alleged mismanagement of public funds during Fubara’s administration, describing it as “mind-boggling.”
Nwaeke, who recently resigned from his position, shared his intention to present crucial evidence to the relevant security agencies when called upon, though he emphasized that some of the details were too sensitive to disclose publicly at this time.
“I cannot also give all my evidence to the media. Some are sensitive. I will provide them to the proper authorities when required,” Nwaeke stated.
He went on to assert that the scale of theft within the state government in the past two years was unprecedented, especially given that this period coincided with the state’s highest ever allocation of funds.
“The level of stealing of public funds and assets witnessed in the last two years is mind-boggling. I have never experienced anything like it in the history of the state,” he said.
During a press conference in Abuja, Nwaeke further alleged that Governor Fubara had directed his chief of staff, Edison Ehie, to destroy the Rivers State House of Assembly.
Nwaeke claimed that he was present at the Government House when a bag of money was handed to Ehie for the operation, although he could not confirm the amount involved.
In response, Governor Fubara vehemently denied the allegations, labeling Nwaeke as “compromised” and claiming that the former civil service head had been coerced into making false statements.
“He is being pressured to lie about me,” Fubara said in a statement on Friday.
The controversy took a personal turn when Nwaeke’s wife, Florence, spoke out, alleging that her husband had been kidnapped following his interview on the ongoing political crisis in Rivers.
In an emotional statement, she insisted that the interview had been given under duress.
However, Nwaeke quickly debunked her claims in a video released in response. He assured the public that he was safe and in good health, rejecting the accusation that he had been kidnapped or forced to speak against his will.
“I have seen the video circulating online, where my wife claims I was kidnapped and that I made my statement under duress. I’ve debunked that,” Nwaeke said.
The former head of service went on to clarify that his wife could not speak on his behalf regarding civil service matters, stating that he was mentally fit and able to speak for himself.
“My wife cannot speak for me on civil service issues when I am still healthy and mentally fit,” Nwaeke stated, suggesting that she may have been under duress or pressure when making her statement.
“I also listened to the suspended governor’s reaction to my press statement,” he added.
“I’m surprised that he never debunked my allegations of bringing down the assembly, which was the main subject, rather he was talking about other issues.
“I have also heard people saying that I have been compromised. If at all I could be compromised, it should not have been my benefactor who appointed me as head of service. I have never been compromised.”
