My sister was killed by police escort, not bandits – Governor opens up
Governor Kefas Agbu of Taraba State has revealed that his younger sister, Atsi Kefas, was fatally shot by a police escort attached to his mother’s security detail, contrary to earlier reports suggesting she was killed by kidnappers.
Speaking during an interaction with journalists in Jalingo, the state capital, Governor Kefas said investigations showed that the incident, which occurred in 2024 along the Wukari–Chinkai Road, involved an officer in the same vehicle as the victim.
Atsi was travelling from Jalingo to Abuja at the time.
“Life is very precious to me. You can’t just end someone’s life and think God will be happy with you,” the governor said.
“My younger sister was shot and killed by a police escort who was inside the same bus with her. Investigation revealed that she was shot at close range.”
He further disclosed that pellets were found in Atsi’s body during surgery, but she later succumbed to her injuries.
The police officer responsible is reportedly under investigation.
The killing was initially believed by many in Taraba to have been the result of an attempted kidnap by bandits targeting the governor’s family.
Governor Kefas made the disclosure while observing a minute of silence for his sister and the more than 50 people recently killed in an attack in Karim-Lamido Local Government Area.
He condemned the ongoing violence in the state and called for peace and unity.
“Those who should be working together to develop their communities have instead turned to crisis and killings, and that is regrettable,” he said.
The governor also announced plans to establish a commission of inquiry to investigate the Karim-Lamido attacks and recommend measures for lasting peace.
