Several people crushed to death, over 40 others injured in Trailer accident
A tragic accident beneath the Muhammadu Buhari Bridge in Nassarawa Local Government Area, Kano State, has claimed the lives of at least seven people, with over 40 others suffering various degrees of injury.
The accident occurred at midnight on Thursday when a heavy-duty truck, reportedly traveling from Takai Local Government Area to Lagos State, experienced brake failure, lost control, and overturned.
The truck, which was carrying approximately 70 passengers alongside livestock, veered off course while attempting to navigate the underpass linking Maiduguri Road to the Ring Road and Zaria Highway.
Eyewitnesses at the scene, including Shu’aibu Hamisu, described the truck as slipping into the underpass, leading to the devastating crash. Some victims were rescued, but others tragically died at the scene.
Alhaji Saleh Karsha, the ward head of Karsha Gabas in Takai LGA, visited the site early Friday morning and confirmed the identification of five of the victims, including his own son, Baban Jummai, whose body was released to him.
The death toll has since risen to seven, with more than 40 injured individuals receiving treatment at local hospitals, including Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital and Mallam Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital.
Emergency responders from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the Police, and the Kano State Road Traffic Agency (KAROTA) swiftly arrived at the scene to assist with rescue operations and evacuate the injured.
This deadly incident is the latest in a series of accidents involving trucks, particularly those transporting livestock, food, and passengers, that have occurred at this same location in the past year.
