Senate President Akpabio announces new State to be created, mentions its Capital as well
President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has reiterated legislative and political support for the creation of Anioma State, describing the proposal as a priority for the National Assembly.
Akpabio made the declaration on Wednesday while addressing party stakeholders at the South-South zonal congress of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Asaba, Delta State.
He said the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains committed to the initiative, which he described as a long-standing demand rooted in equity and development.
According to him, the creation of Anioma State would lead to a restructuring of Delta State, with Warri emerging as the capital of the remaining Delta entity, citing its existing infrastructure.
“Anioma state will be created, with Asaba as its capital. The senate fully supports the initiative spearheaded by Senator Ned Nwoko,” he said.
“This step will usher in a new era of development and shared prosperity for all constituent communities.
“With Asaba as Anioma state capital, Warri will be the capital of the new Delta.”
Akpabio noted that Warri already hosts critical infrastructure, including an airport, seaport, government offices, major oil companies, and a stadium, making it suitable as a capital.
He added that the proposal, championed by Ned Nwoko, has continued to receive attention in the 10th Senate, with expectations that its realisation would bring administrative efficiency and socio-economic benefits.
The Senate President also called for unity among stakeholders in the South-South region and urged support for the Federal Government’s policies.
He emphasised that alignment with the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda would foster sustainable development and strengthen national integration.
