Husband allegedly sets his Wife on fire as Governor’s Wife reacts

Wife of the Anambra State Governor, Dr Nonye Soludo, has vowed to ensure the prosecution of the man who allegedly set his wife ablaze in Abagana, Njikoka local government area.

Soludo, the founder of Healthy Living Initiative, told journalists on Thursday in Awka, that she would follow-up closely on the case and ensure that justice was served.

“I saw the viral incident and directed an immediate visit to the scene of the incident.

“I have received details of the incident from the Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Mrs Ify Obinabo and her Health counterpart, Dr Afam Obidike, who visited the scene.

“I will ensure that the case is followed closely until justice is served,” she said.

Recall that the victim, Mrs Chioma Nwaka, a mother of five boys, was seen in a viral video clip on social media on Tuesday, scampering for safety while carrying a third degree burn around her body

According to eyewitnesses, the victim’s husband, Mr Sunday Nwaka, a middle-aged man, poured fuel on her and immediately set her on fire over a misunderstanding.

It was passersby and neighbours who managed to put out the fire, though it had dealt significant burns on the victim.

She was then rushed to a medical facility in Enugwu-Ukwu, Njikoka Local Government Area, where she was pronounced dead at around 3.a.m on Wednesday.

The suspect has been arrested and would soon be charged.

The governor’s wife, who described the incident as gruesome and evil, lamented the rising cases of domestic violence and abuse in many homes.

She called for serious social reformation, beginning with a systemic approach to fighting drug use and related problems.

“The state government takes issue of domestic violence and abuse as serious crimes, and no one who is found guilty of such offences will walk free.

“However, the state government will find the best approach to take care of the five children of the victim,” she said.(NAN)

Deportation order; Trump orders raids on schools, churches, hospitals to enforce immigration laws

In a significant policy shift, President Donald Trump has authorized U.S. immigration authorities to conduct raids in schools, churches, and hospitals to arrest undocumented immigrants.

This aggressive move, which follows a series of nearly 100 presidential orders, has raised concerns both within the United States and internationally, particularly in countries like Nigeria.

The new directive overturns previous policies that designated these institutions as “sensitive areas” where immigration enforcement was limited.

The decision marks the end of over a decade of protections that prevented ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) from targeting these locations for raids.

The policy change was announced by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) on Tuesday, with the agency emphasizing the need to eliminate any spaces where individuals could evade arrest.

Acting DHS Secretary Benjamin Huffman said in a statement, “Criminals will no longer be able to hide in America’s schools and churches to avoid arrest. The Trump Administration will not tie the hands of our brave law enforcement, and instead trusts them to use common sense.”

As part of this new approach, ICE has also been granted the authority to expedite removals across the nation. Under the revised policy, undocumented individuals who cannot prove they have lived in the U.S. for more than two years can be swiftly deported.

This latest action is part of a broader crackdown on illegal immigration that has intensified under Trump’s administration.

In addition to the school, church, and hospital raids, Trump has signed several executive orders aimed at suspending the U.S. refugee system, blocking access to a key app used for entry into the country, and enhancing cooperation between ICE and local governments.

Trump’s border czar, Tom Homan, confirmed that ICE agents across the U.S. would begin nationwide operations immediately. “ICE officers will be actively enforcing immigration laws,” Homan said in an interview.

However, the policy changes have sparked strong opposition from advocacy groups. The Center for Law and Social Policy warned of severe consequences for immigrant families, particularly those with U.S.-citizen children.

The organization expressed fears that the new measures could discourage families from seeking medical care, education, or disaster relief, and might traumatize children who witness interactions with immigration officials.

Religious leaders have also voiced their concerns. During an inaugural prayer service, the Episcopal Bishop of Washington called on the administration to demonstrate more compassion toward vulnerable immigrants and their families, urging that the policy be reconsidered.
