President Tinubu in closed door meeting with security chiefs, IGP, amidst rising insecurity in Nigeria

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is currently holding a high-level security meeting with the nation’s service chiefs and the Inspector General of Police at the State House, Abuja.

The closed-door meeting comes against the backdrop of renewed violence and insecurity in parts of northern Nigeria, particularly Plateau, Benue, and Borno States, where hundreds of lives have been lost in recent weeks due to attacks and unrest.

Present at the meeting are the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa; Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede; Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hassan Abubakar; Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla; and the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, among other top security officials.

Although the agenda has not been officially disclosed, the meeting is expected to address the resurgence of deadly violence across several regions and assess the progress of recent security measures, including the establishment of a new forest guard unit.

Just days ago, President Tinubu approved the immediate deployment of forest guards to help secure over 1,100 forests across the country, an initiative aimed at curbing the activities of criminals who use these areas as hideouts.

The President’s engagement with his security chiefs comes ahead of his scheduled departure to Rome this weekend. He is expected to attend the inauguration mass of Pope Leo XIV following an invitation from the Vatican.

According to a statement from the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu will participate in the solemn ceremony marking the beginning of Pope Leo XIV’s pontificate as the 267th Bishop of Rome and head of the Catholic Church.
