President Tinubu declares BIPOGA 2026 open, harps on police professionalism

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has formally declared open the 15th Biennial Police Games (BIPOGA 2026), describing the event as a vital platform for strengthening professionalism, discipline and performance within the Nigeria Police Force.

The Games, hosted by Delta State, were declared open on Saturday in Asaba, the state capital. Tinubu was represented at the ceremony by the Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa (rtd.).

In his address, the President emphasised the central role of security in national development, noting that it remains the foundation of economic growth, social stability and public confidence.

He said, “Service is not defined merely by authority or uniform, but by character, competence and conduct,” underscoring the theme of the Games, “Beyond the Badge: Excellence in Action.”

Tinubu added, “A physically fit, mentally resilient and morally grounded Police Force is indispensable to national security.”

He noted that the Police Games, with roots tracing back to the 1940s, have continued to promote physical fitness, teamwork and community engagement, while also enhancing the operational readiness of officers across the country.

Earlier, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori assured participants of a memorable experience, describing the state as a recognised centre of sporting excellence.

He said, “Delta State is proud to host this prestigious national event. Our track record in hosting major competitions speaks for itself.”

Also speaking, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, described the Biennial Police Games as a key pillar for promoting unity, professionalism and operational effectiveness within the Force.

According to him, the event transcends athletic competition, stressing that “policing is not only about enforcement, but about endurance, agility, teamwork, resilience and strength of character.”

The 2026 edition of BIPOGA has drawn police contingents from across the federation, with Delta State hosting what officials describe as a celebration of service, fitness and excellence beyond the badge.
