Presidency reacts as Kwankwaso writes Donald Trump over rising tension between US and Nigeria
The Presidency has praised former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, for what it described as his patriotic response to remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump, who recently threatened possible military action against Nigeria.
Presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, lauded Kwankwaso’s intervention in a post on X on Sunday, calling it a model of responsible leadership and urging others to follow his example.
“Thank you Senator Kwankwaso for your patriotism. This is a time for all political leaders, across the divide, to unite behind our country and speak out, as patriots,” Onanuga wrote.
Kwankwaso had earlier refuted Trump’s claim of Christian persecution in Nigeria, stressing that insecurity in the country “does not distinguish based on religious, ethnic, or political beliefs.
He further appealed to Washington to “assist the Nigerian authorities with better cutting-edge technology to tackle these problems, rather than posing a threat that could further polarise our country.”
Trump had last week designated Nigeria as a “country of particular concern,” citing alleged attacks on Christians and the government’s failure to protect religious minorities, a claim firmly rejected by the Nigerian government.
