Portable remanded in Prison over assault, multiple criminal allegations

Nigerian singer Habeeb Okikiola, widely known as Portable, has been brought before the Federal High Court in Ota, Ogun State, to answer to multiple criminal allegations arising from a New Year’s Day incident.

Police said the musician is facing a nine-count charge bordering on assault, theft, inflicting injury and obstructing law enforcement. The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed the charges on Monday.

Portable’s court appearance followed the circulation of a video on Sunday showing him in police custody. Investigators said the case stems from a complaint lodged by his estranged partner, Ashabi Simple, over events said to have occurred at the singer’s bar in the Iyana Ilogbo area.

Prosecutors alleged that Portable attacked Ashabi, several police officers and other individuals during the incident. Those listed as victims in the charge include Ileyemi Damilola, Akinyanju Oluwabusayomi, Olowu Olumide, Demilade Ogunniyi and Ebuka Odah.

The singer is also accused of unlawfully taking a Mercedes-Benz E300 valued at ₦12 million, reportedly owned by Ileyemi Damilola and connected to car dealer Wally Dex Auto.

In court, two of Ashabi’s siblings gave testimony in support of the prosecution’s case, although she did not appear. Police further claimed that Portable assaulted and obstructed a female officer, Inspector Ogungbe Olayemi, while she was performing her official duties.

The trial judge refused to consider the bail request, noting that the allegedly assaulted police officer was not present to give evidence. As a result, the singer was remanded in custody, with the bail hearing fixed for January 19.

Separately, the Ogun State Police Command said it has opened an investigation into another viral clip that appears to show Portable being physically mistreated while in detention.
