Police operatives recover two AK-47 rifles from fleeing suspected kidnappers

Men of the Kwara State Police Command on Sunday recovered two AK-47 rifles from suspected kidnappers in Bode-Saadu, Moro local government area of the state.

The officers also recovered other items, which include seven empty magazines, 50 rounds of AK47 live ammunition and three Tecno phone handsets.

Others are 11 handset batteries, charms, clothes and N255,000 cash.

This was disclosed by the spokesperson of the state police command, Ajayi Okasanmi, on Monday.

The police spokesperson said the incident happened late December 31 and that one of the suspects, who was on a motorcycle, jumped off and bolted away.

Okasanmi said: “Efforts to arrest the fleeing suspect, who is strongly believed to be one of the kidnappers operating around the border towns of Ekiti, Kogi, and Kwara states are ongoing.

“A detachment of policemen detailed to monitor the axis sighted and flagged down a Bajaj motorcycle operator for a routine check.

“Surprisingly, the rider of the motorcycle jumped down from the motorcycle and ran into the bush.

“The command has promised to exert the necessary pressure to see that the fleeing suspects and his gang members are arrested,” he said.

He further urged residents of the state to always report all strange activities around them to the police, who he said are fully determined to uphold the status of Kwara state as a state of harmony.

BREAKING: Obasa resumed at Lagos Assembly, declares himself as the Speaker

The embattled former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has declared himself the authentic Speaker of the House, saying he has resumed his position as the parliament leader.

Obasa made this known on Thursday after returning to the Assembly Complex under the protection of police and State Security Service operatives.

“I’ve resumed, and I remain the Speaker of the Assembly,” Obasa said.

It was his first time back since his removal on 13 January 2025.

Obasa arrived at the complex with more than 11 police officers and headed straight to the Speaker’s Office, ignoring his colleagues who were seen deliberating in the Assembly’s garden before his entrance.

His return follows a dramatic turn of events at the Assembly, where the security details of the new Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mojisola Meranda, were reportedly withdrawn.

Ramadan set to commence as Sultan of Sokoto issues directives to Muslim nationwide

The Sultanate Council has formally declared that the hunt for the new moon of Ramadan 1446AH will begin on Friday, February 28.

The Wazirin Sokoto and Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, Professor Sambo Wali Junaidu, encouraged Muslims to look up at the sky on Friday in anticipation of the new moon in a statement issued Thursday.

He instructed those who spot the moon to report their sightings to the nearest District or Village Head.
