Police confirm another killing as youth set Police station on fire
The Abia Police Public Relations Officer, SP Geoffrey Ogbonna, on behalf of the Police command on Saturday confirmed the arrest of an unnamed police operative that allegedly killed a businessman at Ebem, Ohafia local government in Abia State.
According to an eye witness, the policeman shot the deceased, Mr Friday Arunsi, dead at his shop in Ohafia local government while the deceased was offloading consignment of beverages from a truck at their store at Eni Njoku Street alongside his brother, Moses.
The policeman was said to have ordered them to stop offloading the goods, but the duo asked for the reason why they need to stop offloading. This, according to Onwuka, annoyed the policemen and they left for the station to sign for a gun, which was allegedly used to kill Arunsi.
In a bid to rescue his life, the deceased was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Umuahia where he was confirmed dead late on Friday.
Another source disclosed who spoke on the basis of anonymity claimed that the news of Aronsi’s death broke in the community on Saturday morning, and the youths protested with his corpse on the street. The source added that military men were already calming the youths before the SARS operatives arrived and shot at the youths. A certain barber, Okoro Kalu, was said to be injured from the gunshot of the SARS operatives and he is currently in the hospital receiving treatment.
The source added that the events that unfolded led the youths to regroup and attacked the Ohafia police station which they broke into and release inmates. The youths also burnt Ebem Customary and Magistrate Courts alongside the police quarters, DPO’s residence and some vehicles in the compound.
