REVEALED: Why Obasanjo opposed ex-Prezident Buhari even in death – Garba Shehu
The late former President Muhammadu Buhari’s spokesperson, Malam Garba Shehu, has fired back at former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s recent negative posthumous appraisal of the Buhari administration.
Shehu stated that Obasanjo’s criticism stems from a deep-seated personal animosity rather than an objective assessment.
Obasanjo had recently described Buhari’s tenure from 2015 to 2023 as “the most worst civil administration in Nigeria.”
In response, Shehu directed journalists to his recent book, ‘According to the President: Lessons from a Presidential Spokesman’s Experience’, for a full explanation of the reasons behind Obasanjo’s dislike for the late head of state.
However, Shehu added that Buhari held Obasanjo in high esteem, but their relationship soured over an “unmet demand” made by Obasanjo.
In the book, which Shehu made available to Leadership, he alleges that Obasanjo made specific requests of Buhari during his presidency, which were not fulfilled.
He explained, “There are many around Buhari who hold that the spectacular falling out between him (Buhari) and his superior in the military whom he cherished and much respected, President Olusegun Obasanjo, was on account of the demand, reportedly put to him by Obasanjo, that the contract for the Mambilla Power Project be given to a contractor he preferred.
“On this, Buhari politely told the former president to allow him to handle it his own way, following the due process that was in place.”
