Peter Obi confirms his ambition ahead of 2027 presidential election

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has once again indicated his intention to run for Nigeria’s presidency in 2027.

Obi made the remarks while campaigning for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate ahead of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) elections in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Addressing supporters at the campaign event, Obi linked victory in the AMAC poll to his broader political ambition, saying: “You see this coming election, support us in AMAC; it will help me. Your support in AMAC is critical to our journey. I am involved and contesting the coming election as number one. When I come back, you will see. I assure you.”

Since Obi’s alignment with the ADC, his supporters, particularly members of the Obidient movement—have intensified calls on the party to present him as its presidential flagbearer in 2027.

However, the party’s spokesperson, Bolaji Abdullahi, has urged restraint among supporters, warning against divisive or inflammatory statements and stressing the importance of internal unity within the ADC.

Meanwhile, political speculation has continued to grow over a possible Obi–Rabiu Kwankwaso presidential ticket on the ADC platform. Kwankwaso’s decision not to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has further fuelled discussions about a potential alliance between the two politicians.

At the same time, supporters of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar have renewed appeals for Obi to consider accepting a vice-presidential slot, similar to the arrangement proposed during the 2019 general election.

Obi, however, dismissed such suggestions, reiterating to his supporters that he intends to run for president as the party’s standard bearer. Emphasising the importance of grassroots support, he again urged voters to back his preferred candidate in the AMAC election, noting that their backing is “crucial to his political journey.”

Since declaring his renewed presidential ambition, Obi has repeatedly maintained that if elected, he would not spend “a day beyond four years in office.”
