Police arrest organiser, four others in Ozoro festival assault incident

The Delta State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of the Ozoro Festival’s organiser, Chief Omorede Sunday, alongside four other suspects in response to allegations of sexual assault.

The action follows widespread reports that several young women were sexually assaulted and molested during the community celebration, prompting swift intervention by law enforcement authorities.

Commissioner of Police, Aina Adesola, strongly denounced the incident, describing acts of sexual violence as “criminal, inhumane, and constitute a grave violation of the fundamental rights and dignity of victims.” He subsequently ordered an immediate and comprehensive investigation into the matter.

In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, the Command disclosed that the case has been upgraded and handed over to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for deeper probe.

“CP Aina Adesola, has ordered that the case be immediately transferred to State criminal department (SCID) for further investigation,” the statement read.

It added, “Tactical and investigative assets have been duly deployed with a clear mandate to identify, apprehend, and ensure the prosecution of all individuals found culpable.”

The Command called on victims and eyewitnesses to support the investigation by volunteering credible information, assuring that “All information provided will be treated with strict confidentiality and the highest level of professionalism.”

While urging residents to remain calm and law-abiding, the police leadership reiterated its commitment to justice and public safety, stressing that those behind the “reprehensible act” will be tracked down and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
