PDP dissolves NWC, sets up Caretaker Committee, plans fresh National Convention

A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has dissolved the party’s national working committee (NWC) and inaugurated a caretaker panel to manage party affairs.

The 13-member committee was inaugurated on Sunday during a national executive committee (NEC) meeting held at Wike’s residence. It is expected to oversee the PDP’s operations for 60 days, pending the conduct of a national convention.

Abdulrahman Mohammed was named chairman of the caretaker committee, with Samuel Anyanwu serving as secretary.

Other members include Kamaldeen Ajibade (national legal adviser), Umar Bature (national organising secretary), Kyari Grema, Janguda Mohammed, Okechukwu Osuana, Nwogu Olaka, Sandy Onor, Adenike Ogunse, Bisi Kolawole, Deji Doherty, and Ibrahim Aboki.
The tenure of the PDP NWC elected in October 2021 is set to expire on Tuesday.

Last month, a rival faction of the party, backed by PDP governors including Bala Mohammed of Bauchi and Seyi Makinde of Oyo, held a convention and elected a new NWC headed by Kabiru Turaki.

During that convention, Wike and his allies including Ayodele Fayose, Samuel Anyanwu, Umar Bature, Kamaldeen Ajibade, Mao Ohuabunwa, Austin Nwachukwu, Amah Nnanna Abraham, Dan Orbih, and Turnah George were expelled.

Rejecting the expulsion, the Wike-led faction has established a parallel NWC, board of trustees (BoT), and NEC, in a tit-for-tat escalation that also saw the Wike group expel members of the Makinde-backed faction.
