PDP accuses IGP Egbetokun of assassination plot against Governor

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun State has made serious allegations against the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, accusing him of orchestrating a plan to assassinate Governor Ademola Adeleke and destabilize the state.

In a fiery press conference on Wednesday in Osogbo, Sunday Bisi, the chairman of the Osun PDP, claimed that Egbetokun had deployed Police Special Forces to escort armed thugs into local government secretariats, fueling unrest.

Bisi called this action a “blatant coup” and part of a broader scheme to target Governor Adeleke’s life.

Bisi’s remarks come in the wake of violent clashes that erupted earlier in the week between supporters of the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) and local authorities.

The violence, which erupted over attempts by sacked APC local government chairmen and councillors to regain control of government offices, has resulted in at least six deaths, including the tragic killing of Remi Abass, the former chairman of Irewole Local Government.

Bisi further accused Egbetokun of enabling violence and acting outside of established protocols.

He raised concerns that the IGP bypassed Governor Adeleke in his handling of the crisis, pointing to the police’s failure to prioritize peace talks initiated by the governor.

“The IGP’s actions are not only reckless but also dangerous. Instead of protecting lives, he’s emboldening those causing harm,” Bisi asserted.

The PDP leader also suggested that Egbetokun’s interventions were meant to disrupt the upcoming local government elections scheduled for February 22, 2025.

Bisi warned that the police chief was attempting to sabotage the democratic process in Osun, which he suggested was part of a larger plan by the APC to reclaim power following their defeat in 2022.

“The IGP is willing to bend the rules and sacrifice the lives of Osun people to prevent elections from taking place,” Bisi concluded, urging both local and international stakeholders to hold Egbetokun accountable for his actions.
