Pastor allegedly defiles worshipper inside Church after prayer session

A 34-year-old pastor, Kelvin Imo, was ordered to be held in custody by a Makurdi Chief Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, following allegations that he raped a church member.

Imo, a resident of Makurdi, Benue State, faces a single charge of rape.

During the hearing, Chief Magistrate Kevin Mbanongun did not accept a plea from the accused due to a lack of jurisdiction.

The case has been adjourned until October 8 for further proceedings.

The prosecution, led by Insp. Friday Kanshio, informed the court that the case was initiated on September 2, after a petition was filed by the victim with the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Makurdi.

The victim’s petition alleges that she went to her pastor, Imo, at a Living Faith Church branch in Makurdi on April 22 for prayer and counseling.

She claims that after he prayed for her, he wiped her face with a handkerchief, causing her to lose strength. The pastor then allegedly overpowered her and had sexual intercourse with her inside the church without her consent.

According to Kanshio, Imo was arrested following a police investigation.

The offense is said to be in violation of Section 284 of the Penal Code Laws of Benue, 2004.
