Suspect arrested as gunmen open fire on Police officers at checkpoint

Gunmen have launched an attack on a police checkpoint at Ipele Junction in Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State, injuring two officers and a female civilian.

The incident happened while operatives of the Safer Highway Patrol were conducting routine security duties at the location.

According to police sources, about three assailants arrived on a motorcycle and suddenly opened fire on the checkpoint.

During the attack, two policemen sustained gunshot injuries, while a woman, simply identified as Taiwo, was hit by stray bullets.

Confirming the incident in a statement on Saturday, the Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Jimoh Kazeem, said the officers were assaulted while carrying out their lawful duties.

He noted that the patrol team quickly repelled the attackers, engaging them in a gun duel that forced the gunmen to flee.

“All the injured victims were promptly taken to the hospital and are currently receiving medical care,” Kazeem stated.

The police spokesman further revealed that one of the suspects, identified as Nwabali, was arrested at the scene, and the motorcycle used by the attackers was recovered.

He added that the suspect is now in custody and has been giving useful information to assist operatives in tracking down the remaining members of the gang who escaped.

Kazeem said the suspect would be charged to court after investigations are completed.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Adebowale Lawal, condemned the attack, describing it as “tragic and condemnable.”

He praised the Safer Highway Patrol officers for their courage and swift response, saying their actions helped prevent further casualties.
