One killed others injured, seven suspects arrested as gunmen attack Police Station

The Kogi State Police Command has confirmed that its officers repelled a coordinated attempt by suspected criminals to breach the Obajana Operational Base, leading to the arrest of several suspects.

In a statement issued on Monday, the state Police Public Relations Officer, William Aya, said the incident was linked to intensified security actions recently carried out across Kogi.

“The Nigeria Police Force has foiled an attempted attack on the Obajana Operational Base by suspected criminal elements and successfully arrested several suspects,” Mr Aya said.

He explained that the incident occurred shortly after a major police-led operation conducted on January 10, which focused on “identified flashpoints, hideouts, and assembly points known to be frequented by bandits and other criminal elements within Kogi State.”

According to him, the operation was backed by the Nigeria Police Force Air Wing, which carried out what he described as precision air strikes.

He said the results of those actions appeared to have triggered reactions from criminal groups operating covertly in the area.

Mr Aya said the attackers tried to strike back by targeting police facilities and assets at the Obajana base but were met with a strong response from officers on duty.

“Police operatives on duty conducted a coordinated counter-drill, effectively neutralising and degrading the assailants,” he said.

He added that a number of the suspects were arrested during the clash, noting that several of them sustained gunshot wounds.

Security agencies, he said, are still pursuing others who escaped, while investigations are ongoing to establish “the source and motive behind the attack on the Police Operational Base.”

Following the incident, the Assistant Inspector-General of Police overseeing the Special Operation in Kogi State, Alonyenu Idu, and the state Commissioner of Police, Naziru Kankarofi, visited the Obajana facility to assess the situation firsthand.

The police spokesperson said security operations across the state would continue, and called on residents to support law enforcement with timely information.

He urged the public to “promptly report suspicious movements, strange persons, or groups to the nearest law enforcement agency.”
