Omoyele Sowore not re-arrested by Police

The Nigeria Police Force has refuted reports claiming that human rights activist Omoyele Sowore was re-arrested shortly after being granted bail.

Earlier reports alleged that Sowore, who had been detained for organising the #FreeNnamdiKanu protest, was taken into custody again within the courtroom following his release on Friday.

However, Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, dismissed the reports as false, stating that the activist was not re-arrested but merely taken to prison in line with court procedures.

“The claim that he was arrested on a fresh charge and whisked away to Kuje Prison to be arraigned on Monday is procedurally incorrect,” Hundeyin said.

“Anyone arrested on a new charge cannot be taken directly to prison, as no correctional facility will admit such a person without a valid remand warrant issued by a competent court.”

He clarified that Sowore was only transferred to prison to fulfil the terms of his bail, as ordered by the court.

“He was taken to prison based on the attached remand warrant, pending when he meets his bail conditions, nothing more,” Hundeyin added.
