Nigerian Police is underfunded in operations and Salaries – Group tells Fed Govt
The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre(CISLAC), says underfunding is hampering the response of the police to ‘Early Warning Signals’.
“While Nigeria’s per capita income hovers at $2,085, the Nigeria Police Force has remained underfunded in both operations and salary,”the centre said.
CISLAC’s Executive Director, Auwal Musa Rafsanjani, stated this while presenting its ‘Policy Brief’ at a press briefing in Kano on Wednesday.
Represented by Jimoh Abubakar, the centre’s Programme Manager, Rafsanjani said thousands of officers in the force were known to receive some of the poorest pay even in the West African sub-region.
The worst hit, he said, were the Rank and Files in the force who spend decades in the line of duty but were hardly promoted, accommodated or paid well.
“As of 2020,a recruit took home N9,019 in basic salary.
”After conversations about police pay during the civilian protests of 2020,the Federal Executive Council approved a 20 per cent raise, with implementation slated to commence in 2022.
“But it was until August before this took effect,a delay that was attributed to insufficient funds on the police costline, at which time the NPF was already owing supplementary salary arrears stacking up to six months,” he said.
Rafsanjani listed other ‘unexplained irregularities reported in the police payment system’
The executive director said, ”Where early warning signals are reported to the police, the citizens are in most cases expected to pay for logistics and mobilisation prior to response.
“These systemic challenges have not only discouraged reporting at community levels but also impacted negatively on response efficiency to Early Warning signals.
”When early warning and response systems work effectively, they have the potential to influence policy making, conflict prevention,peace-making and support peace building and development.” ( NAN)

Deportation order; Trump orders raids on schools, churches, hospitals to enforce immigration laws
Deportation order; Trump orders raids on schools, churches, hospitals to enforce immigration laws
In a significant policy shift, President Donald Trump has authorized U.S. immigration authorities to conduct raids in schools, churches, and hospitals to arrest undocumented immigrants.
This aggressive move, which follows a series of nearly 100 presidential orders, has raised concerns both within the United States and internationally, particularly in countries like Nigeria.
The new directive overturns previous policies that designated these institutions as “sensitive areas” where immigration enforcement was limited.
The decision marks the end of over a decade of protections that prevented ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) from targeting these locations for raids.
The policy change was announced by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) on Tuesday, with the agency emphasizing the need to eliminate any spaces where individuals could evade arrest.
Acting DHS Secretary Benjamin Huffman said in a statement, “Criminals will no longer be able to hide in America’s schools and churches to avoid arrest. The Trump Administration will not tie the hands of our brave law enforcement, and instead trusts them to use common sense.”
As part of this new approach, ICE has also been granted the authority to expedite removals across the nation. Under the revised policy, undocumented individuals who cannot prove they have lived in the U.S. for more than two years can be swiftly deported.
This latest action is part of a broader crackdown on illegal immigration that has intensified under Trump’s administration.
In addition to the school, church, and hospital raids, Trump has signed several executive orders aimed at suspending the U.S. refugee system, blocking access to a key app used for entry into the country, and enhancing cooperation between ICE and local governments.
Trump’s border czar, Tom Homan, confirmed that ICE agents across the U.S. would begin nationwide operations immediately. “ICE officers will be actively enforcing immigration laws,” Homan said in an interview.
However, the policy changes have sparked strong opposition from advocacy groups. The Center for Law and Social Policy warned of severe consequences for immigrant families, particularly those with U.S.-citizen children.
The organization expressed fears that the new measures could discourage families from seeking medical care, education, or disaster relief, and might traumatize children who witness interactions with immigration officials.
Religious leaders have also voiced their concerns. During an inaugural prayer service, the Episcopal Bishop of Washington called on the administration to demonstrate more compassion toward vulnerable immigrants and their families, urging that the policy be reconsidered.

“The late, Suleiman was leading a reinforcement team to rescue Bello Turji’s camp which was in disarray, when he was eliminated during the fire fight,” he said.
Buba said the death of Bello Turji’s second-in-command, close allies, commanders and combatants was a significant blow to the terrorists’ network in the North Western Nigeria, as well as their military and fighting capabilities.
According to him, these group of terrorists were responsible for numerous kidnappings and terrorist attacks across the zone, particularly in Zurmi, Shinkafi, Isa, and Sabon Birni Local Government Areas in Zamfara and Sokoto States.
