Mysterious fire reportedly burns two Children to death

Two children, aged three and six, have been burnt to death in Udo Imuk, Eket Local Lovernment Area of Akwa Ibom State.

The incident occurred at about 7pm on Friday.

The father went to a nearby health centre for an injection while the mother went out earlier for shopping.

The parents were said to have locked the kids in their one-room apartment.

Neighbours said they had no idea that the kids were inside the room when the fire broke out.

The cause of the fire was a mystery because there were no electrical connections, candle or gas cylinder in the room.

The father Prince Ekpo, said: “I left the phone torch on in the room for the children, hoping to return soon after an injection.

“My wife earlier went out to buy something.

“I came back and saw people crowded and discovered my two children were burnt to death and we don’t know the source of the fire.”

BREAKING: Obasa resumed at Lagos Assembly, declares himself as the Speaker

The embattled former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has declared himself the authentic Speaker of the House, saying he has resumed his position as the parliament leader.

Obasa made this known on Thursday after returning to the Assembly Complex under the protection of police and State Security Service operatives.

“I’ve resumed, and I remain the Speaker of the Assembly,” Obasa said.

It was his first time back since his removal on 13 January 2025.

Obasa arrived at the complex with more than 11 police officers and headed straight to the Speaker’s Office, ignoring his colleagues who were seen deliberating in the Assembly’s garden before his entrance.

His return follows a dramatic turn of events at the Assembly, where the security details of the new Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mojisola Meranda, were reportedly withdrawn.

Ramadan set to commence as Sultan of Sokoto issues directives to Muslim nationwide

The Sultanate Council has formally declared that the hunt for the new moon of Ramadan 1446AH will begin on Friday, February 28.

The Wazirin Sokoto and Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, Professor Sambo Wali Junaidu, encouraged Muslims to look up at the sky on Friday in anticipation of the new moon in a statement issued Thursday.

He instructed those who spot the moon to report their sightings to the nearest District or Village Head.

Once reported, the sightings will be relayed to the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, who also serves as the President of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, for a formal declaration.
