A notorious armed robbery suspect in Kano, Halifa Baba-Beru, has been killed during a shootout with operatives of the Kano State Police Special Squad.
According to a statement by the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the incident occurred on April 22, 2025, around 1 p.m., following a distress call about an ongoing armed robbery in Gwammaja Quarters, Dala Local Government Area.
Baba-Beru, one of the state’s most wanted criminals, was reportedly leading a gang armed with dangerous weapons and attacking residents in the area when police officers arrived at the scene.
The gang launched an attack on the officers, resulting in a fierce exchange of gunfire.
During the confrontation, two police officers—Corporal Abdullahi Ibrahim and Sergeant Yahaya Saidu—sustained injuries. Baba-Beru was also critically wounded.
All were rushed to Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital, where Baba-Beru died while receiving treatment. The injured officers were treated and later discharged.
SP Kiyawa noted that the command has launched a manhunt for the fleeing members of the gang and reaffirmed its commitment to bringing all accomplices to justice.
