Man remanded in Prison custody over alleged rape of 24-year-old Lady
A Chief Magistrates’ Court in Makurdi, on Thursday remanded a 54-year old man, Godwin Ola, in a correctional centre, over alleged rape of a 24-year old deaf and dumb woman.
Ola, a civil servant, who resides at Bam-Bam Village, Makurdi, is being charged with rape and indecent assault.
The Chief Magistrate, Kelvin Mbanongun did not take the defendant’s plea due to lack of jurisdiction, and adjourned the case until Sept 15, for further mention.
Earlier, the Prosecutor, Insp Godwin Ato, told the court that the defendant committed the offence in Dec. 2024.
Ato said that the matter was reported to the police through a verbal complaint by Mr Charles Adi of Cheerful Hands Initiative, Makurdi.
The prosecutor said that the victim submitted an application letter to the Benue Internal Revenue Services, where the defendant works.
“The defendant took the deaf and dumb woman to Demekpe area of Makurdi with the pretext of giving her an appointment letter.
“He lured her into a room, forcefully had sexual intercourse with her, and gave her N1,000,” he said.
The Prosecutor said that the defendant who went into hiding after committing the offence, was arrested during investigation.
He said that the offence contravened Sections 284 and 269 of the Penal Code Laws of Benue, 2004.(NAN)
