INSECURITY; Women come together form Vigilante group, patrol metropolis at nights to tackle crimes

Amid growing concerns over rising crime in Jos, a group of young women drawn from both Christian and Muslim communities has formed an all-female vigilante outfit to confront theft, drug abuse, and other security threats.

The initiative, led by Blessing Ngozi Emmanuel, emerged as a grassroots response to what members describe as increasing insecurity in a city once regarded as one of Nigeria’s safest.

Speaking in an interview with Reuters, Emmanuel said the group was born out of frustration with the worsening security situation and its impact on families and local communities.

According to her, the women involved are committed to safeguarding their neighbourhoods, even at personal risk, while complementing the efforts of men and formal security agencies.

“We have been able to help reduce thefts, taking of drugs and other vices,” Emmanuel said.

The vigilante team, which currently consists of about 20 members, reflects rare interfaith cooperation in a region often affected by religious tensions.

Members carry out patrols between 9 p.m. and 1 a.m., focusing on areas considered vulnerable to criminal activities.

Despite their efforts, the group has faced threats and dangers in the course of operations.

Emmanuel revealed that some members have sustained injuries, while others have been intimidated by suspected criminals.

“One of our members was warned by hoodlums that she could be made to disappear if she continued her involvement,” she said.

She, however, emphasised that the group’s mission is not to replace law enforcement but to support existing security structures in maintaining peace.

Emmanuel also expressed concern over the lack of institutional support, noting that it took months before local government officials engaged with the group, despite its ongoing activities.
