JUST IN; Change your faded plate numbers now as Govt issues ultimatum, rebate for Car owners

The Lagos State Government has introduced a limited three-month rebate for motorists with faded or illegible vehicle number plates, in a bid to strengthen road safety and bolster security within the state.

The approval, granted by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, was disclosed by the Permanent Secretary of the Motor Vehicles Administration Agency (MVAA), Mr. Rasheed Muri-Okunola.

He explained that the initiative is intended to promote voluntary compliance by vehicle owners while easing the financial pressure associated with replacing worn plates.

According to the state government, clearly visible number plates are essential for effective traffic control, crime prevention, and digital vehicle identification.

Faded or unclear plates, it noted, hinder law enforcement operations and compromise security efforts.

The rebate applies strictly to the replacement of damaged, faded, or unreadable number plates and does not extend to fresh vehicle registrations.

Motorists seeking to benefit from the discount have been advised to visit the MVAA One-Stop Centre in Oshodi or any authorised MVAA office across the state, and to avoid dealing with unauthorised agents.

The development follows a nationwide review of vehicle number plate charges in 2025 by the Joint Tax Board, which led to an increase in fees due to improved security features and higher production costs.

Under the revised structure, standard private and commercial plates now cost N30,000, while specialised plates such as articulated, dealer, fancy, and government plates attract higher charges.

Although the state government did not specify the percentage of the rebate, officials said the three-month window offers motorists a cost-effective opportunity to update their vehicle documentation and contribute to safer and more secure roads across Lagos.
