Jungle Justice: Mob lynches suspected ex-convict for motorcycle theft
A suspected motorcycle thief, believed to be an ex-convict, was lynched by an angry mob on Tuesday along Kashim Ibrahim Way in Makurdi, the Benue State capital.
According to eyewitnesses, the suspect attacked a motorcycle rider at Railway Quarters, stabbing him several times from behind before fleeing with his motorbike.
Alarmed residents quickly raised the alarm, prompting youths in the area to give chase.
The suspect was apprehended, beaten to death, and his body set ablaze. The stolen motorcycle was recovered.
The injured rider was rushed to the hospital but reportedly died on the way.
Confirming the incident, Benue State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet, said the suspect had only recently regained freedom from prison.
He condemned the mob action, stressing that the Commissioner of Police had repeatedly warned against jungle justice.
“Investigations are ongoing into the matter,” the police spokesman added.
