Insecurity; IGP redeploys Commissioner of Pokice (CP)
The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered the redeployment of the Commissioner of Police for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Ajao Adewale, in response to growing security concerns in Abuja.
Sources familiar with the matter told LEADERSHIP that Adewale’s transfer followed mounting pressure over his performance, especially after a surge in violent crimes under his watch.
His tenure has been marked by escalating security challenges, including a high-profile armed robbery that claimed the life of ARISE News anchor, Somtochukwu Maduagwu, known as “Sommie”, along with a security guard, Barnabas Danlami.
The fatal incident occurred in the early hours of Monday, September 29, 2025, at Maduagwu’s residence in the Katampe area of Abuja.
The brazen attack has since intensified scrutiny of the FCT police command’s ability to curb crime in the capital.
Adewale had taken over from the previous commissioner, CP Benneth Igwe, who was noted for a more hands-on approach.
His successor, CP Miller Gajere Dantawaye, has now been appointed to lead the FCT Police Command, according to an internal directive from Force Headquarters.
The same internal communication, identified as reference number TH.5361/FS/FHQ/ABJ/SUB.6/213, also confirmed the transfer of Deputy Commissioner of Police Wilson Aniefiok Akpan to Kogi State.
Both postings are described as provisional and await confirmation by the Police Service Commission (PSC), in line with statutory procedures.
The directive has been circulated to all zonal and state police commands as well as relevant formations and departments across the country.
