Your tenure doesn’t matter tell us your agenda – Femi Falana questions Obi’s one term promise

Human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Femi Falana, has criticised Peter Obi’s recent vow to serve only one term if elected president in 2027.

Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, restated his commitment on Sunday, citing global figures like Abraham Lincoln, John F. Kennedy, and Nelson Mandela to support his claim that four years is enough to transform Nigeria.

However, speaking during an interview on Channels Television on Monday, Falana argued that pledging a limited tenure is not sufficient without a clear governance agenda.

“It’s not just enough to say, ‘I will be in power for four years or eight years.’ What exactly do you want to do with the time?” he questioned.

Falana also urged the Federal Government to prioritise meaningful governance and ensure public participation in policymaking. “Those in power have a greater responsibility to focus on governance and consult the people before implementing policies,” he said, warning against arbitrary decisions like renaming public places without due process.

Meanwhile, the presidency also took issue with Obi’s one-term statement.

In a statement titled “Peter Obi and His Wrong Examples,” President Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, accused the former Anambra governor of misrepresenting history and context in his comparison with the late leaders.
