An Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court on  Tuesday, sentenced a headteacher, Benjamin Ogba to two life sentences for defiling two underaged girls, both seven years.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Justice Abiola Soladoye held that the prosecution had proven its case beyond doubt to the satisfaction  of the court.

Soladoye, however, held  that  the evidence of the defence witnesses were tainted with lies, which did not hold waters.

According to her, the convict is a serial paedophile, and his testimonies are pack of lies.

She said: “the defendant and his fellow defence witnesses were not truthful and credible in their testimonies.

“Their testimonies were pack of lies, and fell asunder like a pack of cards.

“This serial paedophile, a headteacher, who is expected to teach his students morals, stooped so low and defiled the underage girls, what a shame!

“This irresponsible and randy teacher who teaches his students nonsense, should be locked away,”she ruled.

The Judge also praised the two survivors  for their courage to have  spoken up in court  against their assailant.

She said that sexual abuse of any sort must be reported and not swept under the carpet.

Soladoye further urged parents not to relent in reporting sexual abuse cases to the appropriate authorities.

“Continuous education and awareness of this issue of sexual menace must be at the  forefront of all stakeholders in the administration of justice so as to advocate for the rights of young children.

“The defendant, having been found guilty of the two counts bordering on defilement, is hereby  sentenced to life imprisonment on each of the counts.

“The sentencing, will however, run  concurrently and his name be registered in the sex offences register as maintained by Lagos State,” she said.

NAN reports that the State Counsel, led  by Mr Olusola Soneye, called three  witnesses while the defence counsel called four  witnesses during trial.

The prosecution submitted that the convict, sometime in the months of April and May 10, 2019, at Shalom  Private School, Oke-Ira Road, Ebutte Metta in Lagos, the defendant defiled the two survivors by having unlawful sexual intercourse with them.

The prosecutor told the court that one of the girls however, informed her mother and the case was reported at the station.

The armed assailants reportedly stormed the community around 11:30 a.m., wielding guns, machetes, charms, and other dangerous weapons, leaving residents in fear as they launched a coordinated attack.

Before targeting the monarch’s palace, the gang allegedly assaulted a resident, Mrs. Ogunoye Oluomo, who sustained serious injuries and was robbed of her personal belongings.

According to eyewitnesses, the attackers made their way to the palace with the intention of killing Oba Adinlewa John.

The monarch, however, managed to escape unharmed, though the incident caused widespread panic throughout the community.

Confirming the incident, the Commissioner of Police in Ondo State, Adebowale Lawal, said a tactical response team was immediately dispatched to the area, leading to the arrest of ten suspects at the scene.

Recovered from the suspects were two locally made pistols, a single-barrel gun, live ammunition, charms, and other assorted weapons.

Lawal revealed that the suspects had already confessed to their involvement in the plot and would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.

He added that efforts are underway to apprehend other members of the gang who fled during the operation.

“Ondo State will not be allowed to become a breeding ground for violence and criminality,” the police commissioner said. “Security has been reinforced in Igoba to restore calm and ensure that no such incident occurs again.”

This attempted assassination comes just a day after another disturbing incident in the state, where the Onidogun of Idogun, Oba Moses Bakare, his wife, and their son, Prince Victor Bakare, were attacked by angry youths in Ose Local Government Area during preparations for the community’s new yam festival.

The monarch was assaulted, his wife stripped partially naked, and the crown prince reportedly injured.

The police have launched separate investigations into both incidents, which have sparked concern over rising threats to traditional institutions in the state.

Meanwhile, those injured during the attacks are currently receiving treatment at medical facilities in their respective communities.

Authorities say normalcy has returned to Igoba following the swift police intervention, with a heightened security presence now in place to maintain order and deter further violence.
