Hard fact; More Politicians to dump PDP for APC admits Bukola Saraki
Former Senate President Bukola Saraki has pledged to do everything within his power to reposition the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and help resolve its lingering leadership challenges.
Speaking with journalists on Wednesday in Ilorin, Kwara State, Saraki acknowledged the internal crisis plaguing the party but expressed confidence in its future.
He also confirmed that some members of the PDP may still defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), highlighting the urgency of reconciliation within the party.
The PDP has been embroiled in a prolonged leadership dispute since the lead-up to the 2023 presidential election.
Tensions persist, especially between loyalists of former presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar and members of the G-5 governors’ bloc, led by the current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
The party is also currently facing a fresh dispute over who should occupy the position of National Secretary.
In response to these issues, the PDP recently set up a reconciliation committee chaired by Saraki. The former Senate President has since begun engaging stakeholders in a series of meetings aimed at restoring unity and stability within the party.
Despite the internal wrangling, Saraki maintained that the PDP remains the most credible and structured opposition force in Nigeria’s political landscape.
According to Saraki: “Some members of the party (PDP) might still defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
“I’m also confident that politicians from other political parties might also join the PDP.
“The only viable opposition party is PDP, and yes, there are challenges, and I have taken it upon myself to do my best.
“I am seeing responses from our colleagues who are also ready to settle our differences.
“I want to use this opportunity to reassure our members across the country that we are doing our best to rescue the party’s situation. We are confident that we will tackle the situation. We are committed to it,” he added.
