500 Senior Police Officers Undergo compulsory Promotional Exams Nationwide

More than 500 senior officers of the Nigeria Police Force appeared before the Police Service Commission (PSC) on Thursday for promotion interviews, a key step in their consideration for elevation to higher ranks.

Among those interviewed were 56 Chief Superintendents of Police, who are being considered for promotion to the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police.

In addition, 451 Superintendents of Police were recommended for promotion to Chief Superintendent of Police.

The officers participated in a written examination presided over by Justice Paul Adamu Galumje, PSC Commissioner representing the Judiciary, and Taiwo Lekanu, Commissioner representing the Police and Chairman of the Commission’s Standing Committee on Police Affairs.

In a statement, PSC spokesperson Ikechukwu Ani emphasised that the Commission has now made promotion examinations a mandatory requirement for career advancement in the Force.

He said the decision was aimed at ensuring that police officers are intellectually and professionally prepared to meet the demands of modern policing.

“This is to ensure that merit, competence, and character are the foundations of promotion in the Nigeria Police Force,” Ani added.

The promotion exercise continues on Friday, September 19, 2025, when Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs) will appear before the Commission for their own round of examinations and interviews.

Speaking on the importance of the reform, PSC Chairman, retired Deputy Inspector General of Police Hashimu Argungu, said the Commission is committed to building a more effective and responsive police force aligned with the vision of a new Nigeria.

He noted that the PSC remains steadfast in its pursuit of a transformed police system and urged Nigerians to continue supporting the Police Force as it strives to better serve the nation.
