Don’t drag Frank Mba into IGP’s tenure debate, he’s a loyal DIG – Ex Presidential aide
Former President Goodluck Jonathan’s communications assistant Reno Omokri has refuted allegations linking Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG) Frank Mba to the recent controversy surrounding the tenure of Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun.
Omokri responded to rumors that Mba would be working to overthrow Egbetokun’s leadership in a post on X, especially in view of the impending dispute surrounding Egbetokun’s forced retirement at age 60 in September 2024.
Omokri, after conducting his own inquiries, assured the public that Mba is satisfied with his current role as DIG and remains firmly loyal to IGP Egbetokun.
He further stressed that Mba’s focus is solely on his duties and that any allegations of disloyalty are baseless.
The controversy surrounding Egbetokun’s tenure intensified after some social media users, particularly from the South-East, accused Mba of allegedly plotting to position himself as Egbetokun’s successor.
Others have expressed concerns that Egbetokun’s tenure extension is a calculated move to prevent an Igbo officer from assuming the IGP position.
Mba, promoted to DIG in June 2023, is the most senior police officer from the South-East region. However, Omokri dismissed these speculations, stating that they risk damaging Mba’s reputation and career.
He went further, revealing that even close allies of IGP Egbetokun acknowledge that Mba is one of the strongest supporters of his boss within the police force.
The former media aide emphasized that the appointment of an IGP is a presidential prerogative, unaffected by social media trends or public sentiment.
Omokri called on those who claim to support Mba to cease spreading harmful rumors and allow the DIG to focus on his professional responsibilities without unnecessary distractions.
