President Tinubu meets FCT Minister Wike, Fubara, Rivers leaders in Aso Villa
President Bola Tinubu has stepped directly into the Rivers State political crisis, convening a late-night meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja with the principal figures at the centre of the dispute.
Sources within Aso Rock confirmed that the closed-door talks involved the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike; Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara; and other prominent political leaders from the state.
While official details of the discussions were not made public, the meeting is understood to have focused on easing the deep-seated tensions that have unsettled Rivers State politics for months.
Developments following the meeting have intensified speculation that reconciliation efforts may be yielding results.
Reports indicated that Governor Fubara accompanied Wike to his residence in Guzape, Abuja, shortly after leaving the Villa.
Unconfirmed accounts further suggested that the governor made conciliatory appeals to his predecessor, pledging to refrain from actions that could be interpreted as disrespectful an overture widely viewed as a possible turning point in their strained relationship.
The presidential intervention comes amid a prolonged political standoff between Fubara and Wike, whose fallout became public shortly after the governor assumed office.
The dispute fractured the Rivers State House of Assembly, splitting lawmakers into opposing camps loyal to either leader and paralysing legislative business.
At various points, the crisis escalated into impeachment threats against the governor, drawn-out court cases, and repeated disruptions to governance.
Observers have attributed the conflict largely to a struggle for political influence and control of party structures and state governance in the oil-rich state.
Despite multiple earlier reconciliation attempts by party leaders and elders, the impasse persisted, fuelling concerns about political stability and effective administration.
President Tinubu’s involvement is therefore seen as a calculated move to calm tensions, restore order, and prevent further escalation ahead of future political engagements within Rivers State and the ruling party.
