Four opposition Governors in advanced talks to defect to ruling Party says APC
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has disclosed that at least four serving governors from opposition parties are in advanced talks to defect to the ruling party before the close of 2025.
According to the APC, the planned defections are part of its broader strategy to expand its political dominance and consolidate support ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Dr. Ijeoma Arodiogbu, the APC National Vice Chairman (South-East), revealed this in an interview, naming the governors of Plateau, Taraba, Rivers, and Abia states as those being courted by the party.
“It is a possibility that the Plateau governor will join us likewise his Taraba counterpart. We are also looking forward to receiving Rivers governor, Siminalayi Fubara, and Governor Alex Otti of Abia State in our midst,” Arodiogbu said.
He explained that discussions with the governors were progressing smoothly and could be finalized “in the coming weeks.”
“These are all high possibilities. We expect that to happen in the coming weeks before our congresses. Most of these defections are expected to happen before the end of this year. Once they happen, it will further confirm that the APC remains the dominant and most organised political platform in Nigeria,” he added.
Arodiogbu attributed the growing interest in the APC to its reform-driven agenda and inclusive leadership style, which he said had continued to attract influential politicians nationwide.
“The reality is that the APC has grown into a home for all progressives. Our growth isn’t just in numbers but also in the quality of leadership. Governors and other political figures are increasingly recognising that this party provides stability and direction for Nigeria’s democracy,” he stated.
He also emphasized that the party’s national chairman has maintained an open-door policy for new entrants.
“The national chairman has emphasised that the APC remains open to all. We are welcoming individuals of goodwill who support President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda,” he said.
Arodiogbu expressed optimism that the anticipated defections would further solidify the APC’s position ahead of its 2025 congresses and enhance its competitiveness in the 2027 general elections.
